This was the childhood home of Richard III. The castle with its massive 12th-century keep stands controlling the river that winds through Wensleydale. From the battlement there are splendid views of the countryside.

The Castle occupies a commanding position above the town. Founded after the conquest by Robert Fitz-Ranulph, it was once stronghold of Warwick the King-Maker and a favourite residence of Richard III.
This sculpture of King Richard III who spent his childhood at Middleham Castle, is by Yorkshire artist Linda Thompson, M.A. It was commissioned by English Heritage and jointly funded by the Middleham Key Partnership to enhance visitors' experience at the castle.
